I clearly recall the day when I decided my kids are old enough for me to step back and give them a chance to be more independent. I didn’t think about it much, neither have I doubted it – this is what I’ve seen in my childhood, this was what everyone around me used to repeat and so I knew it should be. Once children turn 13-14, they must be able to deal with most of their daily chores and commitments, and once they reach 16 or 17 they can even live by their own.

The moment my kids were born, I knew exactly which books I will put in their hands once they get old enough. Given that “old enough” to dive into the magic of books is about the age of one, I had plenty of time to prepare my list. A young brain perceives the world through imagery first so at the top of the list were several stories, beautifully illustrated by Ondřej Sekora, Libico Maraja, Beatrix Potter and Sandro Nardini.

It seems most of the people I know cannot remember their first contact with art masterpieces. I mean the very first time they’ve seen a painting or a sculpture which took their breath away and made them stare without anything on mind except joy and appreciation. For me this was the paintings of the Russian artist Ivan Aivazovsky.

ode for the soap

When I was little all we had for hands and body washing  was reduced to water and soap. No fancy bottles, scented colours or specialised beauty products of any kind. The oval gently scented white soaps in our apartment in the city, and the big uneven evil-smelling knobs of homemade soap in our grandparents’ village house.
